One of the most infamous traditions of the Pep Band during our tenure was the 21st birthday Corner Crawl. By the time my buddy Pete and I were 4th years, the “Corner” part of the crawl had pretty much become “Maartens” and only Maartens.
And for good reason! The plethora and variety of creative shots available as well as the fact that the staff knew us made it the destination of choice.
On Pete’s 21st birthday, a full four days after mine, we tromped to Maartens and began ordering him shots. I joined my fellow of-agers at the bar, laughing at my friend and enjoying a beer. It was either Baxter or Roelofs who put a random shot down in front of me.
But it wasn’t my birthday? Down the bar from me Jeff (redacted for national security) smirked at me and said, “you’re crawling, too.” Of course, there’s no saying no to that. So we proceeded to ‘enjoy’ shots and drinks until things became rather hazy.
I attended, escorted and led a number of other Crawls, all of which were entirely at, or wound up ending at, Maartens. Those I remember, are fond memories indeed.
